Pre-requisite courses

Explore award

1 day assessment - training available

Your Explore Award (was BC 2 star) gives you ownership; allowing you to choose where you move next in the world of paddlesport.

Learning to make confident choices with this individualised approach. Recognising your ability to independently paddle your chosen craft in a sheltered water environment. This is a water based course including an assessment day to assess your personal paddling skills, depending on experience you may be ready for assessment or require training.

Paddlesport Safety & Rescue course

Full day training & assessment - Ratio 1:8

The PSRC (was FSRT) course aims to provide paddlers with key safety and rescue skills required to operate safely and to be able to deal with common problems in a sheltered water environment. This course is designed for all paddlers irrespective of their chosen craft; Kayak, Canoe, Paddleboard or Sit on top. The objective is to introduce, explore and practice simple strategies and safe skills that can provide the paddlers with the tools to solve common paddling issues. The course content focuses on rescuing from the paddlers specific craft and includes training & assessment.

Paddlesport Instructor award

This combined training and assessment course will enable you to run games and activities to support learning and inspire adventure and exploration for new paddlers in stable craft. This is the qualification used by outdoor centres, organisations and clubs to support their activity delivery.

 

2 full days - training & assessment 

 

Age - Candidates must be 14yrs+

Ratio - 1:6

Craft - Canoe, Kayak, Paddleboard or Sit on top

Course content:

  • Kitting up a group and getting afloat

  • Activities and games to support learning

  • How to use mini journeys to promote exploration of the environment

  • Keeping your group safe

Pre-requisite courses & ability:

  • Paddlesport Safety and Rescue course (PSRC/FSRT)

  • Explore award or equivalent paddling ability in your chosen craft

Further development & additional crafts

SUP Sheltered water award

This award is designed to develop your understanding of how to plan and paddle a Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) in sheltered water, using the appropriate abilities and decision making skills to travel safely on your pre-determined route.

Touring award

Your Touring Award (was BC 3 star touring) endorses your skill, judgment and decision making required to have a successful day on a river or estuary. You will be confident in planning and undertaking journeys with proficient skills to be in control throughout.

Multi day Touring award

As a Multi-Day Touring Award holder, you will have the ability to apply your choices to an enjoyable multi-day trip on a variety of waters including canals, lochs/lakes, estuaries and sections of rivers up to grade 2.

Kit considerations for your course

Kayak, Canoe or Paddleboard

What to bring:

  • Boat or board appropriate for the course

  • Paddle

  • BA & helmet

  • Extra's appropriate for your award (towline, safety knife, towline etc)

  • Water

  • Snacks

  • Full change of clothes, shoes and a towel

(We offer free kit hire for our open courses including, Kayaks, Canoes, SUPs, personal protective equipment and safety tools)

What to wear:

  • Wetsuit or Dry suit

  • Wet boots or trainers

  • Seasonal extra's (Sun cream/gloves)

(We don't provide personal clothing such as wetsuits, wet boots or dry suits)

We run a weekly Kayaking Club at Buzzards Valley vineyard, perfect for children and teens looking to get into paddling and develop their skills on the water!
